80-year-old was cutting trees when he fell down embankment, according to police.

An 80-year-old Hillsborough man drowned Sunday in the Raritan River after falling down an embankment outside his Riverside Drive home, police said.

Raymond Goodrich was pronounced dead at about 7 p.m. Sunday, after Hillsborough police and rescue squad volunteers responded to a report of an unresponsive man found in the Raritan River.

Police said the initial investigation found Goodrich had been pruning trees on his property along the river when he apparently fell down a steep embankment.

He was unresponsive when pulled from the river, and was pronounced dead at the scene by Somerset MICU.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.

Hillsborough firefighters and the New Jersey Regional Medical Examiner also responded to the incident.
