Poll: Does Hillsborough Need More Shops or More Restaurants?
Which would you like to see more of in Hillsborough?
After posting an article about the forecast for commercial real estate in Central and Northern New Jersey, a number of readers weighed in with what they would like to see come to town.
Hillsborough currently has a fair number of empty storefronts, whch could be redeveloped in a number of ways—but we wondered whether you felt the township needs more retails shops or more restaurants.
Would you prefer to see a restaurant chain like Chipotle's or Joe's Crab Shack move in—or would a Modell's Sporting Goods or Children's Place enhance the local business scene more?

Sorry but this poll is a mute point anyways. Hillsborough residents want these places, but do not want to accept or deal with the negative effects these places can bring. Businesses also do not want to deal with the miles of red tape the local government has created to open a successful business.

Yes. Look at how hard we fought to keep Sonic out.

Hillsborough residents should be happy with the stores & options they DO have. Just go a few miles down the road into Montgomery & look. they have basically nothing! Tiger's Tale & the diner. the Tusk restaurant just closed. there is hardly any retail stores whatsoever!

What exactly DO we have???? I agree with BoroGuy. We have tons of vacant stores because Hillsborough makes it difficult for any new business to start or survive here. How about something besides a bank or a pizzeria?

Neither! We have a number of empty properties, and some of these have been vacant for years, so obviously Hillsborough is not able to support new stores or restaurants at this time.

How about a Wegmans or Trader Joes? Our Shoprite is so outdated and the quality of the fruits and vegetables there are subpar. Shop rite never seems to have things I'm looking for. I currently shop at the Franklin Shoprite or the Bridgewater Wegmans. I would love to keep that money in my town if they would offer a decent food store. And I think Chipotle would be nice. Family affordable.

Why does everyone keep saying. Get a Trader Joes. They do not want to cmoe here. I read they have a business model and we were not on their radar, so please get over it. I do not think Wegman's would put another supermarket so close to Bridgewater. There are other goor viable options and we have a supermarket coming in a few months. Lets support what we have!!

The climate created by both the township government as well as residents opposing any sort of development unless it is in a remote location (and far away from locations where they could, you know, make money) then Trader Joes and Wegmans are not going to even give Hillsborough a glace. Towns and their residences can wish and dream about all these stores, but it is the stores that choose where they want to do business as they are in the business of making money. With the precedent set by actions by the local government and people over the past five years, I would be scared to open a large chain store in this town.

What red tape does Hillsborough have that other towns don't?

Size of lot, distance from road, and size of signs are some examples.
Basically it looks like the residents of here want big name chains and stores but still want to have small town charm. Sorry folks but cannot have it both ways. I, for one, am just happy to support local businesses that we have now even if they are chains.

We need to proactively attract businesses that won't go under due to over-saturation of the same types of businesses. Think about what we leave businesses cause us to leave the town and bring them here. We can use a couple of chain restaurants to balance the Italian and Asian restaurants without having to drive to Rt. 22. Everyone seems to love Paneras (would have been perfect for Blockbuster). And with the business that Kohls has done since arriving, I'm shocked that another department store hasn't replaced K-Mart.

It's a shame that Hillsborough has the reputation of being a difficult and expensive place to open a business, large or small. I have spoken to business owners in other towns like Bridgewater, Somerville and Flemington who are looking to expand or open new locations and thy won't touch Hillsborough with a ten foot pole. That tells you something about the business management of this town. Yet, the same people are still in charge.

It is not just the businesses that don't want to expand to Hillsborough due to the BS the township puts them through, it is also the contractors. Whenever I contact someone for a quote to do work at my residence and tell the contractor I live in Hillsborough, they groan! That tells me a whole lot of unnecessary red tape is going on and I have seen first hand the hoops you have to jump through to get a variance in this town. It all adds up to paying out more money!
I feel sorry for the new places that open up in town run by individuals who know their business has potential. They have to charge higher prices to make up for the high rent they have to pay the township. Then people come in to check out the new business and don't want to pay those prices so they opt to travel a distance to feel they are getting a better value. The business ends up folding after a short period of time and we end up with another empty store front.

I wish we had a bakery with good, homemade breads and doughnuts in town. It'd be great if we had one in the Kingsbridge Center, so that people in the western part of town wouldn't have to drive all the way to Raritan or Manville for a decent boston cream. :-)

I think Hillsborough needs a place like a skating rink or bowling alley or something of that sort. Since Trader Joes and wegmans won't open in our area, we don't need any more supermarkets. A lot of vacant places out there can use something new, stores that can be found in the Bridgewater mall but not here are needed. One thing is for sure though, Hillsborough has enough pizza places, workout places/gyms, places that sell hamburgers and food of that nature, and banks.
