New Grocery Store Preps Old Pathmark Location

Sunbury, Pa.-based Weis Markets is preparing the former Pathmark store in Hillsborough to re-open as the company's fourth New Jersey location sometime later this year.
"We have two locations scheduled to open in the first half of the year, and two later in the year," company spokesman Dennis Curtin said.
He couldn't confirm which group the Hillsborough store is in, but noted the company is planning a "multi-million dollar project" to "bring it up to our standards," and to have the decor and store layout match the company's trademark appearance.
Weis Markets operates 163 stores in five states, including 25 in Maryland, 11 in upstate New York and three currently open in New Jersey (Hackettstown, Newton and Franklin Borough in Sussex County). Curtin said the stores are full-service grocery stores, with a focus on freshness and quality in its produce, seafood and meat departments.
"We think we have exceptionally fresh departments," Curtin said.
Curtin added the store will offer prepared foods, as well.
"There are some customers who come in at the end of the day, who might not know what they are going to have for dinner," Curtin said. "Those people could end up at a restaurant, or they can take something home."
He said the company competes in many different markets, successfully going up against larger companies by focusing stores on their local markets.
"We know the difference, so we might have a product in a New Jersey store that we won't have in our Hazelton (Pa.) store," Curtin said.
The company is in its 100th year.

Yeah, we are already overrun with them, almost like there is one on every corner. We should also close the Stop and Shop and let Shoprite have a monolopy. I know for a fact that the people of hillsborough and manville don't mind havig to drive on 206 to go shopping, don't mind it at all.

What is KATC's problem. "another grocery store" is not Hillsborough's problem, what is at issue are all the other empty store fronts that already exist. You should be happy that the Promenade is now once again filled and that makes the tax collector very happy.

What a waste?? Would you rather see that property sit empty?? Or look at the KMart tenants.... oh that's vacant too, just like Cost Cutters. Look at all the empty property along roads in NJ and I think it is good for a new merchant to come in. Manvill has NO supermarkets so those folks have to come to Somerville or Hillsborough to shop. BRAVO for Weiss.

Hillsborough is becoming a wasteland of vacant buildings. Weiss will be vacant in a few years. They have the same business model as the other stores that have tried to best Shoprite and failed. Shoprite is a wonderful store.

I mind having to shop at Shoprite its always crowded not the very clean. and the checkout is always jammed packed.
Stop and shop is over priced and not much of a selection so I'm glad Weis markets is opening !

There are many reasons that ShopRite is crowded - prices, selection, friendly and helpful staff, location, etc. They are always there for community groups.
And I have never noticed a problem with cleanliness.

Not too excited about this no-name supermarket. It's better than the location being vacant, but the town needs a Whole Foods, not another Shoprite wanna-be (like Stop & Shop). But I doubt that we have the appropriate demos for Whole Foods.

Pathmark went out of business because no one ever shopped there, including the residents of Manville. I agree with LisaD we need something more up to date like a Whole Foods or Trader Joes. Another grocery store is not going to bring in any new business. We might as well put in another bank or gas station. We need a store that the neighboring towns don't have. We have all these empty stores because we wait for businesses to look for us. We need to be more proactive and find the businesses that will help this town prosper. Filling the space with just anything is a waste of time and money.

We miss the Pathmark too. A&P owns both A&P and Pathmark. They were so smart that they closed both stores, one in Manville and one in Hillsborough. LisaD states that Weis is a "no name" store. I have shopped at their stores in PA and was impressed by their selections, along with the cleanliness of the facilities. Welcome to New Jersey Weis Markets.

Went to school in Central PA and Weis was the biggest chain there - this is very much a low-end, rural brand name. A Wegman's or Whole Foods would have been much better for the town's image (think potential real estate buyers coming to Hillsborough for the first time).

I like Hillsboro but I often find that residents have an unrealistic view of the town. It is a nice safe mid to upper class town at best. Bringing high end retailers like Whole Foods and Trader Joes will not make it into a Princeton or Madison. Hillsboro has great schools, open space and now an affordable supermarket. Let's be happy for our improvements.

I agree. Residents also forget how clogged up 206 is and how long it takes outsiders to drive into town to shop. Most businesses in town survive on the shopping of the 38,000 residents. We are not a suitable location for a lot of high end businesses because we are hard to get to.

The problem is that we keep building "mega homes" in Hillsborough and if the retail choices don't match the needs of the new residents as well as those who have been here for years, they will go elsewhere to spend their money. We need some kind of mix. Would love to hear from someone from the township to know how we are determining what would and should do well in this area. There have got to be other towns similar to Hillsborough that we can learn from. Let's hope Weis is better than the locations I have been to in PA, very "mom & pop"

I agree with Keith. We do not all live in 'mega homes', nor can we afford to shop at places like Whole Foods or Trader Joes. For my family, Weis will be a welcome addition.

I am looking forward to the new supermarket. TJ's would be nice as I travel at least once a month to Princeton, more frequently when I worked in Princeton. Apparently, we are not the demo for it, which I can't understand. I have plenty of friends in town who would frequent it if it were closer than Princeton. On the other hand, I don't go out of my way to get to Wegman's. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

check out the owners of the mega homes now being built and bought in town. they dont care about retail choices. usually three generations of families under one roof and are not going begging for wegmans . they will be very happy with Weiss. And i ould be surprised if we get the PA version, it will be updated to sell products we want. hope they have a soup and salad bar. Shop rites SUX. lousy soup and dirty salad bar.
