The Bridgewater Gurudwara held a memorial service Tuesday evening for the victims and families of the shooting in Oak Creek, Wis.

The evening included Sikh prayer, comments and condolences from civic and church leaders, and a meal that followed.

"In any dark event, there is always somewhere a silver lining that helps you to move on," Harabhajan Nayar said after the ceremony. "There is no doubt that this is a shock, not just to Sikhs, but to every decent person. It is more specifically sad for Sikhs because many of us happen to know some of them."

Nayar said the shooting has saddened the entire Shikh community.

"At the same time, I think it is awareness among the Sikh community that yes, we are sad, and yes, we had a loss," he said. "But the support, the sympathy and the encouragement that came from all other brothers and sisters, including the police and the public in general, the different faiths, the church people, is encouraging that you are not alone. And when you can share sadness, the weight goes down. That is what I felt today."

It is great that so many local faith communities came together in support of the Sikhs. More love, less hatred.
