Amid the national debate on gun control, Hillsborough residents can exercise a little more control over their own guns with free gun locks being offered by Hillsborough police.
According to Township Committeewoman, and police liason for the committee, Gloria McCauley, the department will provide two free locks to any household.
The locks are manufactured by Remington, and work on most handguns, rifles and shotguns, she said at Tuesday's meeting.
For those more interested in reducing the number of guns in their household, Somerset County Proescutor Geoffrey Soriano announced a gun buy-back event for April 5 and April 6.
The buy-back will be held at four locations in the county, including St. John's Episcopal Church in Somerville, and the First Baptist Church in Somerset. Payment for handguns, rifles and shotguns turned in will be $100—assault weapons will net $250.
Guns must be taped or wrapped and placed in a box or case to bring to the buy-back—as well as unloaded.

Excellent idea! But I really hope there isn't a obvious rush because that would only mean most owners weren't being responsible in the first place. CT shooting was the mother's fault first.

Trigger locks are a good idea, except for the firearm you intend to defend yourself with, other responsible safety options are available for those.

Fred, I'd be curious to see a source cited for that info. I'm curious how Hillsborough got private funding for a buy-back when, almost universally, everyone else has done it with grants and other municipal funding.

The buy back is not being done in Hillsborough-- the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office has organized it and set four locations, Somerset, Somerville, North Plainfield and Bernards.

Gun buyback? You can expect and increase in home gun thefts just before that. Do you think the thugs are going to sell their own guns? And if your law abiding citizens owning guns but think disarming themselves will actually be safer without them......
look at the sheeple, er subjects, of the United Kingdom and the huge increase in violent crime when they outlawed handguns there. Cities that have held buybacks have recovered few working guns because at todays prices buyers outside the locations paid much more. Just another Utopian dream of a world with no evil!
So if you're so sure this is a great idea.......put a signs in your front yard.......
"This house has not firearms" or "My guns are locked up and I can't defend myself"
