Hillsborough's Jack Panagos Wins Junior Golf Tour Trophy

Two stroke lead earns International Junior Golf Tour's Architects Cup.

The International Junior Golf Tour returned to Architects Golf Club in Lopatcong, April 27-28 for the 2013 IJGT Architects Cup. 111 junior golfers ages 9-19 representing seven states and two countries were treated with amazing weather and scenic views during this two day, 36-hole competition.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Jack Panagos of Hillsborough took home the Architects Cup first-place trophy after two great rounds of golf this weekend. Panagos played a very impressive first round with five birdies carding a 1-under-par 70.

But it was Architects Golf Club employee, Eamon Marone of Belvidere, N.J., who had the lead heading into Sunday after carding a 2-under-par 69. Marone earned KENTWOOL Lo-Pro honors on his home course with his spectacular first-round play.

Panagos started his final round off with a bang with four consecutive birdies on the front nine, and lead the Boys 15-19 Division by two stokes at the turn. Second-place finisher Roland Massimino of Lumberville, Pa., birdied his first two holes on the back nine, making it an exciting back nine. Panagos carried his momentum into the back nine by carding two birdies and five pars to earn himself his first IJGT Title with a 3-under-par 139 final score.

“It feels awesome to win the title,” said Panagos. “I knew it would be tough to win this weekend with all of the great competition, and I feel really happy.”

Massimino finished in second right behind Panagos with a weekend 1-under-par 141. Rounding out the Boys 15-19 Division top three was Marone, Armando Olivieri of Greenwich, Conn., and Jake van Arkel of Haverford, Pa., all carding a weekend even-par 142.

Coming off a first-place finish in the Boys 14 & Under Division at the Western Pa. Major at Nemacolin, Nate Menon of Wyomissing, Pa., wanted to carry last weekend’s success into the Architects Cup. Menon started his weekend with a first-round 1-over-par 72, and found himself in a three-way tie with Sam Goldenring of Florham Park, N.J., and John Felitto of Mountainside, N.J. The Boys 14 & Under Division was filled with low scores heading into Sunday, and Menon needed a spectacular final round to repeat last weekend’s success.

Menon started his second round off with a bang making birdies on his first two holes, giving him an early two-stroke lead. With two more birdies on the front nine, Menon had the championship title in his sights after the turn. After an impressive eagle on No. 1 (his 10th hole), Menon never looked back and carded a spectacular 6-under-par 65 in his final round, earning him Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award honors. With his great play over the weekend, Menon carded a weekend 5-under-par 137 tournament total.

“It feels really good to win this week,” said Menon. “I knew I had to shoot under-par in the second round to win this weekend, and thankfully I was able to do that.”

Goldenring finished in second place right behind Menon with a weekend 2-over-par 144. Rounding out the top three in the Boys 14 & Under Division was Drew Tomback of New York City, N.Y., carding a final score of 147.

In the Girls Division, Brynn Walker of St. Davids, Pa., carried a three stroke lead heading into Sunday's final round. Her first-round 3-over-par 74 consisted of three birdies and nine pars, which earned her KENTWOOL Lo-Pro honors. With a talented field in the Girls Division, Walker had to bring her best game into Sunday's final round.

Walker’s first round lead dwindled after a shaky front nine, giving Camilla Vik of Greenwhich, Conn., a chance at a comeback. Vik’s front-nine score of 1-under-par 34 put the pressure back on Walker, who responded with birdies on No. 10 and No. 14. Walker was now in the driver’s seat and had the IJGT Title in her sights. Her first round lead was just too much for Vik, and Walker took home her first IJGT Title by carding a weekend 9-over-par 151.

“I’ve been chasing an IJGT Title for awhile,” said Walker. “After playing in three events this year it feels very good to win one.”

Finishing right behind Walker was Vik with a weekend 12-over-par 154. Vik’s final-round score of 3-over-par 74 earned her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award. Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division was Cara Basso of Downington, Pa., carding a tournament total 13-over-par 155.

The IJGT Northeast Tour will travel to Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor, N.Y., to host the AB Golf Designs Junior May 4-5. To sign up for this Event, or others, please visitwww.IJGT.com/info or call 888.936.5327.
