Fines Steep for Sweeping Leaves Into Street
Hillsborough police chief warns of penalties if yard waste is not in proper container in street.
As fall cleanups begin around town, Hillsborough Police Chief Paul Kaminsky released a statement Tuesday, reminding residents not to place loose leaves and debris in roadways.
According to township ordinance, a property owner, occupant or contractor cannot "sweep, rake, blow or otherwise place yard waste, unless the yard waste is containerized, in the street." Yard waste is defined as grass clippings and leaves, Kaminsky said.
Violation of this ordinance could result in up to 90 days in prison, a $1,250 fine or as much as 90 days community service, Kaminsky's statement said.
The Hillsborough Department of Public Works will begin the leaf pickup program on Nov. 5. For more information, call 908-369-3950 or visit the town website for pickup and dropoff schedules.
