Cops: Pedestrian Hurt After Struck, Pushed Off Road
Neshanic Station woman suffers minor injuries after she was struck while walking on River Road.
A Neshanic Station woman suffered only minor injuries after she was struck by a pickup truck and pushed off the roadway while she was walking in the northbound lane of River Road late Saturday night, Hillsborough Police said.
According to police, Leonora A. Torres, 34, was walking in the northbound lane when she was struck by a Ford pickup truck Saturday night shortly before midnight on River Road, about one-half mile north of Amwell Road.
The truck, driven by Thomas R. Benard Jr., 20, of Hillsborough, was travelling northbound when it struck Torres, pushing her off the side of the roadway, police said.
Torres was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for minor injuries, police said.
The roadway was closed for approximately 45 minutes while the accident was investigated.
In addition to the police, the Hillsborough Rescue Squad and the Somerset Medical Center MICU responded to the scene.
No further information was released. It was not immediately known if any summonses were issued.

She's not very smart to take a walk on that road, especially at midnight.

I live in Flagtown and would love to walk to the YMCA or the Library. When I moved back to town after a 25 year hiatus, I actually tried to walk on South Branch Road to the library. After almost getting creamed at the corner by the Y, I realized I couldn't do that again. The community needs to start installing sidewalks. When I grew up here, the township was rural agrarian. We all walked everywhere and rode our bikes with out fear. Now, Hillsborough is bustling with traffic. That means we need to realize this is no longer a rural community and start installing sidewalks on our major roads.

I agree!! I believe that people are finally realizing that walking is good.....we'd like to have a sidewalk from Steinmetz Rd.to the shopping center, on the south side of Amwell Rd.............it would be much safer for pedestrians!
