22 Shore Towns Under Water Emergency
At a press conference at Wolf Hill Recreation Area in Oceanport, Gov. Chris Christie said full water service should be restored by July 4th.
Full water service to Monmouth County residents isn't expected until July 4th, with temporary service being restored in the next two days, Gov. Chris Christie said at a press conference at Wolf Hill Recreation Area in Oceanport.
Christie, on hand to discuss the broken water main that resulted in a water shortage and boil-water advisory for 22 Monmouth County towns with New Jersey American Water and county officials, asked all county residents to conserve water and warned that authorities will be on the lookout for those using water for non-essential purposes.
"This is about the lousiest time of the year this could possibly happen," Christie told the assembled crowd of reporters and county officials. "Often times these problems happen when we least want them to happen. We can get through the next two days effectively using all of the folks that we have if you help by conserving water. And so please, do not be watering your lawns, do not be watering your plants, don't be filling your pools, don't be doing that stuff for the next 48 hours at least. And for those in the 22 towns I read off, please make sure you're boiling your water."
A significant water main failure occurred at around 12:45 p.m. Friday at Swimming River Reservoir causing water outages in parts of Monmouth County and affecting the residents of several towns directly. The collapse occurred at NJAW's Swimming River Water Treatment Plant in Tinton Falls.
Residents of Middletown, Aberdeen, Highlands, Rumson, Fair Haven, Little Silver, Oceanport, Sea Bright, Tinton Falls, Holmdel, Shrewsbury, Long Branch, Eatontown, West Long Branch, Deal, Allenhurst, Loch Arbor, Neptune, Monmouth Beach, Lake Como, and Shrewsbury and Ocean Townships are under a boil-water advisory. Water should be brought to a rolling boil and left to boil for at least a minute before it is safe to consume, officials said.
All county residents have been asked to conserve water following the county's decision to declare a state of emergency.
NJAW is currently installing temporary pipes at the site of the water main break to restore partial service, though Christie said the capacity will only be about five to seven million gallons of water a day instead of the 40 million gallons of water that typically pass through the water main. Replacement pipes are on their way to New Jersey from a foundry in Alabama, Christie said, and should arrive within the next 24 hours.
When asked why NJAW went to Alabama to find its replacement pipes, Christie said the specific type of pipe needed for the repair are especially rare. Other options more local to the state don't exist.
Christie the boil-water advisory could be lifted for most residents currently affected within the next couple of days before full service is restored by Wednesday. Some towns likely won't see water restrictions lifted at all until that time because of their elevation.
Still, Christie said the county's residents can help aid the process by conserving water.
"If we can keep water consumption at normal, daily levels we'll be able to get through this crisis with very little interruption, except for the folks in the more elevated part of Monmouth County in the north eastern part," Christie said. "If we have people using water on the outside it's going to cause a real problem for us over the next 24 to 48 hours while the folks at New Jersey American Water are working to fix this problem."
Christie also joked that while many of the New Jersey'ss residents are "ready to become criminals" by shooting off fireworks in a state where they are banned, that Monmouth County residents think twice. The high heat, combined with less than adequate water availability poses a significant risk.
Christie declined to speculate on the cause of the water main break or if it was the result of damage incurred during Hurricane Irene last summer. The Board of Public Utilities will be conducting an investigation, he said.

The concern here is the condition and cause of the pipe failure. If it is geologic it may be unavoidable. If it is due to 100+ year old pipe, it raises the question about the adequacy of the whole system. It becomes an Infrastructure question. You know, all those things like clean water that we take for granted.

But of course we can't have any government spending to shore up our infrastructure, now, can we. It wouldn't be "conservative." /snark

NJ American Water is a publicly Traded for profit privatized water supplier. This is the Conservative plan to establish America, Inc. where every service is a for profit industry. Think about Cablevision delivering you essential services like water and education. Did they swap public heath and safety for profits and dividends for share holders? They can't outsource water but they can underfund the delivery system and use inferior supplies to deliver it to your home.

Dan – If government control is better, then why are American Jails so dangerous, costly, and ineffective? After all, that is total government control.
BTW, when you worked as a loan office at a used car dealer how many times did you secure a loan for say 4%, then turn around and tell the customer you got him a great deal at 9%? Also, how much of that fluff did you stick in your pocket, and if a customer defaulted on their loan downstream, did anyone come back to you and take your commission for that loan away? Nahhhh, didn’t think so!

Actually, I wanted to reply to Mr. Campbell, but there is no 'reply' button. American jails are not under total government control. The Corrections Corporation of America has many of them and the number is growing. There was recently a scandal in PA where two state judges were sentencing people to very harsh, long terms in the privately run prison. The judges were then getting monetary kick-backs. The scandal was exposed, but the prison corp continues running the prison.
The second part of the answer given by Mr. Campbell seems to be a pointless non-sequiter. I do not see how it has any relation to the original answer.

First I was never a loan officer for a car dealership. Second people A. don't have to buy a car, B. have the right to shop around for a better deal. How long can you go without water ? Much of the water these for profit companies control was provided because the Government built Dams and drilled wells. unfortunately those public resources were sold by local Governments to private sector companies. Now the people have to pay more and get worse service.

Utilities that are supposed to meet the residents' needs should not be privatized. The water company in much of Bergen County is now a private international company called Suez. Suez has been cited for poor water practices all over the world. In Bergen County it is trying to sell off property that is in or near flood plains for developments that will destroy communities and be responsible for hundreds of homes being in extreme danger when flooding occurs. When the profit margin is the reason for a utility company's decision making, watch out. Rates go up (as they have gone up in Bergen County) and the public good is often disregarded as the bottom line becomes more important.

I would suggest that anybody not happy with the water delivery services they currently have should dig a well. Or would that be too inconvenient? Don't forget that many in this state have no option for water delivery and must rely on well water.

They are both frauds as are you BTW. These for profit suppliers of public services fail all over the Country and for the most part are related to crooked Politicians. That is the issue.

according to the reports, a large part of the fault and mispayment comes from the states, not the federal government. also, it says "The overpayment typically results from an administrative error made either by the government, the employer, the worker or a combination of the three."
while the federal government can certainly always get better at its job, when viewed objectively it's unfair to blame president obama for screw ups on the state level, and for errors made by the employer and worker.

Can't you people ever be honest about anything? $3.5 trillion of the socalled Obama overspending came from the Bush tax cuts and two wars that were handed to him. There is no doubt that he did pull us back from the brink with the stimulus and saved the American Auto industry which is more competive and profitable today. The $14 billion even if true, which I doubt, is about Americans cheating America. What did you want him to do, go door to door himself and check on these people? Maddoff stole $50 Billion himself and under Bush we lost that much in a couple of Months in Iraq, stolen by crooked leaders and American Contractors.

OK, rtrux, fair enough. I don't like strawman arguments either.
Dan, what exactly do you mean by Americans cheating America? It seems to suggest that we should be grateful for whatever the government let's us keep of our earnings ... as opposed to letting the government redistribute it through social engineering, incompetence or incompetent social engineering. For example, lately Sen. Menendez thinks Obamacare is wonderful because it will lower the deficit by $1 trillion over twenty years. Meanwhile, the Gross Federal Debt has risen $6 trillion in only the last four years!
And with regard to anonymity, there is a long, respected tradition of the use of pen names. See the Wikipedia article. Personally, I don't need to know the full, legal name of the person I'm conversing with, let alone see their mug.

Tom, My comments about Americans cheating America was in response to the Comment about $14 billion paid out in illegal unemployment claims. Yes it is the Goverment that paid them but it is people that file and collect them. The poster implied that it was somehow the fault of the Obama Administration that these claims were paid. They are also administered by State Government.
The main issue I have with anonymous posting is that people post things that are vile and would not say if they have to post their names. redrider is a classic example of that. If you are going to call me out by name, the least you could do is acknowledge that you were dead wrong when you claimed LIBRARIANS HATE THE GOVERNMENT and when you claimed MADOFF STOLE $50BN HIMSELF. Yes, I am yelling b/c you are clueless and you make stuff up or just say things that are completely incorrect yet cry victim when people call you out on being wrong. So do us all a favor and learn the difference b/w a Libertarian and a Librarian. When you are done w/ that, go read up on Ponzi schemes, fake profits and Madoff. You will find if you a little reading that the net amount of the fraud was under $20bn and almost none of that made it to Madoff or his employees. The money was wheeled out to earlier investors just like in any other Ponzi scheme. You might also realize after reading those reports that fake profits can't be stolen b/c they never existed to begin with and that Madoff and his family's wealth when it was seized was in the tens of millions of dollars and not in the tens of billions of dollars. But why let a few facts get in the way of your rants, right Dan?

The current administration blames George Bush for just about everything wrong right now with this country. It hurts when the shoe is on the other foot. Obama should man up and admit that his administration has made mistakes as well - including the $14 billion they have handed out from the 50% of the people that pay taxes in this country. Lets blame bush for global warming, the power outage last october, the american league losingthe all star game. Get a grip dems - Obama has put us in a deeper hole than we were 4 years ago - and the hole keeps getting deeper. His answer - wealth redistribution.

You can't have it both ways. A simple yes or now answer please. Is the federal government in any way culpable for the mismanagement of a portion of the $14 Billion dollars that was sent to people who should not have received the payments?
rtrux
8:32 am on Thursday, July 12, 2012
and you can't make up your own rules for how questions can be answered fairly. the report says a large part of the mismanagement happens on the state level, and that a degree of fault is also employers and workers who make errors on forms. in other words, an objective view of the situation is that states, workers and employers are largely at fault, the federal government much less so.
i realize this doesn't conform to your narrative and that you will dismiss it anyway, but those are the facts.

You would think that the Fed Gov't would perform a spot audit on how and where the $14B was being spent. I did gov't contract work for years (nowhere near $14B) yet there was typically a quarterly audit on makiing sure the allocation was being correctly used.
